The song alma di quì by the group Meridianu which I was fortunate enough to hear at a concert given at St Dominique’s church in Bonifacio lent meaning to the time I spent wandering around Corsica between boarding the boat in Marseille on 31 March and returning from Propriano on 14 April 2012. This Corsican song, the words of which are given below, therefore provides the framework for this work, which opens and closes with an extract from puttana vita.
puttana vita | this damned life |
Passanu ghjorni è settimane | Days and weeks go by |
Tempi straziati à colli è fali | Endless times of torment |
Oghje ci mena è per dumane | Strike us today, and tomorrow |
Ùn s'aspetta tanti rigali | We can expect few gifts |
Hè aspessu istrosa è dissapita | Often strange and dull |
Puttana vita | This damned life |
... | ... |
alma di quì | soul of this place |
Sì in la ruina d'un ponte | You are in the remains of a bridge |
Petra mimoria à pricà | A memory in stone where one prays |
Omi cù u core in fronte | For those upstanding men |
Morti pè a libertà | Who died for freedom |
Si parolla trista à dì | You are a sad word |
Alma di quì | Soul of this place |
Sì in l'antiche paghjelle | You are in the old songs |
Di e belle serate corse | Of fine Corsican evenings |
Quandu fratelli è surelle | When brothers and sisters |
Cantanu è megliu forse | Sang and perhaps conveyed |
Più cà ciò chì si pò dì | More than can be said |
Alma di quì | Soul of this place |
Batti in core di a teghja | You beat in the heart of the rock |
Bolli in l'aque di u fiume | And boil in the waters of the river |
Sì ventu chì trizineghja | You are the gusting wind |
Sì mare biancu di sciume | And the white foam sea |
Di furie ch'ellu ùn pò dì | Of the anger that cannot be spoken |
Alma di quì | Soul of this place |
Luci in l'ochji di u vechju | You shine in the eyes of the old man |
Quandu a strada hè finita | When his journey is at an end |
Si leghje cum'in un spechju | As in a mirror one reads there |
Sciali è miserie di vita | The success and failure of life |
Chì solu u silenziu sà dì | That only silence can express |
Alma di quì | Soul of this place |
Sì madre di cumunione | You are the mother of communion |
Trà l'omi è u so paese | Between men and their country |
Sì prighera è passione | You are the prayer and the passion |
Per piglià e so pratese | To defend it |
Alma eterna bella à dì | Eternal soul beautiful it is to say |
Alma di quì | Soul of this place |
puttana vita | this damned life |
... | ... |
A passà la cun tantu straziu | Enduring so many tragedies |
Si puterebbe esse stanchi | One should be exhausted |
È di campà perde u laziu | And lose the will to live |
Ma sai quant'è tù ci manchi | But you know how much you will miss it |
Quandu s'appronta a surtita | When the time comes to leave |
Puttana vita | This damned life |
Ma cara vita... | But a life so dear... |
